a hungry escape

sometimes you just gotta make it
no thrills
just one simple moment
to fill
or kill
the emptiness
eating at your soul
it’s a hungry escape
with dry seconds
that shake like
october leaves

sometimes you just gotta make it
standing in the rain
with an absent curse
as we remember nothing
and hang routines
on a rusty nail

sometimes you just gotta make it
as you, rend wisdom
and descend into a
more stylish form of chaos

sling empty words
with memorable zeal
because
the mouse is too slow for the cat
the cat is too small for the dog
and we are too stale
for the lead palaces of modern humanity

sometimes you just gotta make it
because the night is young
and you are old
as these hands are sliced open
and spill rapid letters
in the form of human poetry

sometimes you just gotta make it
because the crazy never fails to disappoint
on and on, as electric ghosts dream of
finding that one golden sentence

sometimes you just gotta make it
when you’re half admired
and nearly expired
as you endeavor
to embrace all this excess
and remember younger years

suddenly everything is stopped
not dead, just paused
on a plane of velvet oblivion
patterns become particle pacemakers
twisted along a landscape
too expeditious to measure
what is it that defines, and divides us?
as we drip, and strip
down another naked and innocent reality
and tired habits
creep towards the bottom line

sometimes you just gotta make it
to forget inflation
and the distorted meaning of time
as we open windows to breathe
a half-hearted and holy rhyme

sometimes you just gotta make it
because the beer can is empty,
the bed isn’t made
and life is short

the lighters are raised high
in an impassive salute
and
sometimes you just gotta make it
because
you just gotta make it
