turned around
\nfashioned upside down
\nset to scale, and
\nresembling something almost human<\/p>\n

where have the last 20 years gone
\nthe jobs, the loves
\nthe escapades, the ecstasies
\nthe conversations, the poems
\nthe agorist dreams of revolution<\/p>\n

murdered at the last moment
\nas we trade hopes and fears
\nlike dusty playing cards
\nin a labyrinth of adult intent<\/p>\n

humbled by fate
\nwe are broken by time
\nthen put back together again
\nthough, somethings\u2019 missing
\nand the pieces don\u2019t quite fit<\/p>\n

uniform yet unordered
\nwe wrap language
\nin soft little packages
\nso as not to offend
\nas the children are schooled
\nin the arts of
\nexcess and division<\/p>\n

embrace, perceive and produce<\/p>\n

a man has a voice
\nbut no face
\nstopped in the middle of the road
\nthere\u2019s rioting in the streets<\/p>\n

hard lines
\nmap uncertain shrines<\/p>\n

did they trap us in this oblique life
\nor did we simply
\ntrap ourselves<\/p>\n

sitting here at this machine
\ni still feel trapped
\ntrapped by the faint memory of words
\ntrapped by shorter breaths
\ntrapped by the clock
\ntrapped by ideas
\nthat come to die
\nlike young men in useless wars<\/p>\n

but then, a moment of reprieve
\nas she comes to set me free
\ni\u2019ve told you many times before
\nabout this kitten in my lap
\nevery morning
\npurring softly and
\nstaring at me with squinting eyes
\nshe is my only constant
\nand she is beautiful<\/p>\n

more beautiful than the sunrise
\nmore beautiful than all the women i\u2019ve bedded
\nmore beautiful than the fall of civilization<\/p>\n

cats hold the secrets of the universe
\nin their small, fertile, feline forms
\nit\u2019s a truth
\nthat only artists and madmen know<\/p>\n
