<\/p>\n

every morning at sunrise i hear them
\nmeowing, scratching at my door
\ni am being summoned<\/p>\n

these cats, four intrepid beasts
\ncongregate in the dining room
\nawaiting the morning ritual
\nshould i tend to the dog first
\nthey race, and pace in between my legs
\nas the oldest one stands by the water dish
\nwith one paw in it, patiently waiting
\nshe gets served first<\/p>\n

these cats they are
\nhypnotic
\npoetry in motion
\na distraction of the highest order<\/p>\n

the younger ones are
\ncurious and unruly
\nalways chasing each other
\nclever beasts
\nopening cabinet doors
\nand lurking
\ntiny yet fearless
\nthey jump from counters to tables
\nin gracefull disregard
\nfor the rules of men<\/p>\n

the older two are
\nmajestic
\nsitting atop tables and couches
\ngazing upon me
\nslightly judgmental
\nbut always compassionate
\nand most times, i\u2019m nothing but a
\nglorified cat pillow<\/p>\n

ash and scratchy, my two
\nforbid me to write
\nthey demand my attention
\nevery time i\u2019m at this computer
\nhow can i resist<\/p>\n

when i\u2019m sitting at my desk
\nunable to produce anything worthwhile
\nthey come to rescue me
\nclimbing in my lap
\nrubbing against my hand and head
\npurring, lulling me into a soft sense of security
\nthey make it so easy to forget my troubles
\nwhat other creature can accomplish this feat
\nand do it with such ease<\/p>\n

soft and silly
\nsagacious and sacred
\nthey charge my home
\nwith enigmatic energy<\/p>\n

these four cats often
\nmake me laugh and feel loved
\nespecially when i need it most
\nempathetic creatures they are
\nlifting me up from
\nthe deepest depths of sorrow<\/p>\n

cats don\u2019t have owners
\nthey have caretakers
\nunpaid staff if you will
\nthey are individuals
\nknowing and seeking no master
\nfierce and independent
\nthey run the show
\nanarchic and amazing, they are
\nset to tread softly in this crazy world
\ncats are loyal, faithful
\nthey will never betray<\/p>\n

they are my salvation<\/p>\n
