perched in an open cage
\nwaiting for for
\none more sign
\n(the gods have sent me many)
\nthere\u2019s this fear of letting go
\nfor freedom is akin to
\nuncertainty
\nand i\u2019ve always enjoyed
\nmy cardboard security<\/p>\n

the first twenty years of life
\nare spent defining yourself
\nwriting a soulful
\nand incomplete script
\nwatching waiting<\/p>\n

while the next twenty
\nare spent
\nediting
\nfiltering
\naimlessly submitting
\nfrom one taskmaster to the next<\/p>\n

most mornings i sit in this chair
\nsurrounded by cats
\na hair trigger of
\nunpredictable emotion
\ntalking to myself in
\nhushed and half honest tones
\nmore thought than action<\/p>\n

the click of the keyboard
\nis more soothing
\nthan the click of the hammer
\nand with a simple prayer
\ntoo much time is spent
\non minute details<\/p>\n

so many truths are nothing but
\ncarefully crafted illusions
\nalways just
\none word
\nor
\none touch
\naway
\nfrom a perceived perfection<\/p>\n

reality however
\nkeeps burning
\nslow and steady
\nlike a forgotten cigarette<\/p>\n

with no direction
\nand no goal
\nthe script is
\ncontinually re-written
\nas if the answer
\nwas something tangible
\nlying in wait
\njust over the the next horizon<\/p>\n

there comes a point however
\nwhen refusal to ask why
\nis no longer an option<\/p>\n

the mistress of karma
\nfollows in the background
\nwaiting to educate
\nand annihilate
\nthis complicit avoidance<\/p>\n

slavery and insanity
\nare two sides of the same coin
\nand i\u2019ve had more than enough
\npocket change to last a lifetime<\/p>\n

the rent on this cage
\nis finally paid
\nand it\u2019s now time
\nto wander the world
\nmeager and free<\/p>\n
