will winter hearts thaw
\nwhen forsaken songwriters
\nstop writing in their
\nforsaken songbooks<\/p>\n

and all that could have been<\/p>\n

I can still smell her perfume
\nfrom the last brief embrace
\nyet decorative half truths
\nand clockwork fears
\nheld us back like
\ndistant shock waves
\ncrashing against an anxious shore<\/p>\n

this time it’s too real
\nlove too short
\nas beautiful and as painful
\nas an un-watered cactus<\/p>\n

I want to fight
\nto resurrect that phantom feeling
\nbringing it back to the center
\nfor one more touch<\/p>\n

pain like this subsides
\nbut never fully leaves
\nit resides somewhere down below
\njust under the surface of the soul<\/p>\n

healing is superficial and
\nsad poetry is better
\nthan being numb<\/p>\n
