{"id":110,"date":"2015-02-15T18:38:20","date_gmt":"2015-02-15T18:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/poeticexorcisms.wordpress.com\/?p=110"},"modified":"2017-06-13T09:55:18","modified_gmt":"2017-06-13T13:55:18","slug":"the-memories-of-odds-and-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/poeticexorcisms.com\/index.php\/2015\/02\/15\/the-memories-of-odds-and-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"the memories of odds and ends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>it was a small blanket<br \/>\nof little comfort<br \/>\nbut necessary<br \/>\nred and from an airline<br \/>\nand carried everywhere<\/p>\n<p>i always wanted to be a scientist<br \/>\nor superhero, like batman<br \/>\nI had boxes stacked in a corner<br \/>\nwith a bookcase drawn on one side<br \/>\nand computers on the other<br \/>\nflip the switch of imagination<br \/>\nand there I was<\/p>\n<p>I remember a skeleton key<br \/>\nheavy, long and brass<br \/>\nhung from my neck<br \/>\nit was magical<br \/>\nopening all the doors<br \/>\nI couldn&#8217;t see<br \/>\nthen one day I lost it<br \/>\nthe first trauma of<br \/>\nchildhood innocence<\/p>\n<p>one pack of garbage pail kids<br \/>\nfor a quarter (no tax)<br \/>\ndown at the local corner store<br \/>\nthe neighborhood kids were<br \/>\nmr. labbe&#8217;s biggest customers<br \/>\ncandy, ice cream, soda, and cards<br \/>\nit was a hangout for old timers<br \/>\ncool, quiet, and comforting<br \/>\nnow it&#8217;s an apartment<\/p>\n<p>milkshakes and fried scallops<br \/>\nthe best in town<br \/>\nsat at the top of Sand Hill<br \/>\nobscure and not well known<br \/>\nglo&#8217;s place wasn&#8217;t fancy<br \/>\njust an old french diner<br \/>\nfor old french men and old french women<br \/>\nwith their catholic school grand kids<\/p>\n<p>in those days the bad kids (like me)<br \/>\nwere made to stand on the wall<br \/>\nduring recess<br \/>\na cruel punishment<br \/>\nby petty and frustrated nuns<br \/>\nmade all the more so by children<br \/>\nin mocking play<br \/>\nbut my father put a stop to that<br \/>\nstill I never learned my lesson<\/p>\n<p>christmas eve<br \/>\ncigarette smoke haunted the room<br \/>\nis it any wonder I love it now<br \/>\nthe men laughed and the women hollered<br \/>\ndeaf or hard of hearing<br \/>\nloud with alcohol and french blood<br \/>\nhard lines from<br \/>\nhard living drawn<br \/>\non their faces<br \/>\nwhile all the children lingered<br \/>\nin the basement playing pool<br \/>\ntill the time for false repentance came<br \/>\nmidnight mass, even then it was a trip<\/p>\n<p>winter wasn\u2019t so bad in those days<br \/>\nwe stayed out all day until we were<br \/>\nsoaked and cold to the bone<br \/>\nbuilding secret sidewalk igloo\u2019s<br \/>\nand forming armies for<br \/>\nthe great snowball battle to come<br \/>\nthe worst thing to happen<br \/>\nwas a black eye from a cruel iceball<br \/>\nkids&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>growing up in the 80&#8217;s<br \/>\nwe didn&#8217;t have<br \/>\ngood computers or smart phones<br \/>\njust one lucky kid with a nintendo<br \/>\nwe had huffy and BMX bicycles<br \/>\nwith pegs on the front tires<br \/>\nfor daring passengers<br \/>\nwe had sleds&#8217;
